HOME SWEET HOME : US DEBUT
1 November 1954
I waited long enough for my American debut,Bing had a $ 1,000 policy, too bad for him. Lawrence Kelly had good manners and Carol Fox energetic business handling, she came to Verona to talk,$ 2,000 a night, three operas of my choice, two performances each. They agreed on everything,my choice of conductor Nicola Rescigno, and two old friends and colleagues, Simionato, Rossi-Lemini.
I opened with Norma ,they liked what they saw and heard
----Miss Callas does not have the voice of an angel, but she is certainly the most exciting soprano in the world, sings and acts with her whole being, the complete performer of our time.
--- Miss Callas's Norma is beyond compare, the greatest ,second to none.
The critics were impressed, so did the popular press ,the Chicagoans welcomed home the little girl from New York's Washington Heights that came back to sing for them after singing all over the world.
Norma, La Traviata and Lucia, ten, twenty curtain calls each night, what more could I ask for,Chicago had Al Capone now they have La Callas, the city made me proud to be American.
